## What this directory will cover

The Connecticut Window & Door Guide will index contractors who install and replace windows and exterior doors across the state. Both are openings in a building envelope, both fail in the same places, and both are usually sold as products when they are really installation jobs. That is the reason they share a directory.

Launch is planned for September to October 2026. This brief describes the coverage and the method in advance, alongside the rest of our

Listings will describe window installation and window replacement, including the difference between insert and full-frame work, door installation, energy-efficient windows, and the flashing and weatherproofing details that decide whether an opening stays dry. In a state with this much older housing stock, replacing a window often means disturbing old paint, which brings federal lead-safe rules into the conversation.

## How installers will be scored

Scores will be built from public customer reviews, weighing sentiment, star rating, volume, recency, and completeness, with a Bayesian adjustment so a thin review record cannot outrank a long one. The method is published on

This trade needs one extra filter. Window and door replacement attracts in-home sales appointments and same-day pricing, which produces a particular kind of review: written by someone who never had work done, describing a quote rather than an installation. Those reviews say something real about a business, but they are not evidence about installation quality, and the method treats them accordingly.

How to read contractor reviews without being fooled

[/guide/reading-contractor-reviews/ →](/guide/reading-contractor-reviews/)

shows how to spot them in any listing, ours or anyone else’s.

### What counts as evidence here

| Signal | Weight in the score | Why |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Public customer reviews | Scored: sentiment, rating, volume, recency, completeness | Anyone can go and check them independently, which is the whole basis of the method |
| Small review samples | Reduced by a Bayesian adjustment | A short run of perfect ratings is not the same evidence as a long record |
| Older reviews | Reduced, because recency is weighed | They describe work the contractor may no longer be doing the same way |
| Payment, advertising, any commercial relationship | None. Never used | The ranking engine has no access to who has paid for anything |

> **What will never be used**
>
> Payment, advertising spend, and any commercial relationship. Any paid surface would be labeled and would sit outside the ranked list.

## Who this directory is for

This is the trade where the sales process is most likely to shape the purchase, and the homeowner most likely to be pushed.

Window and door replacement is commonly sold in the living room, by appointment, with a price that expires at the end of the visit. That structure is designed to prevent comparison, and it works: a homeowner who has sat through two long presentations rarely wants a third, which is exactly the outcome the format is built to produce.

A ranked directory changes the order of operations. Comparing installers on public review evidence, before anyone is invited into the house, means walking into that appointment already knowing which firms have a record of installing well and which have a record of selling well. Those are not the same list.

Contractors are covered separately: listing will be free, requires nothing, and can be corrected or removed on request.

## What this page is not

No installers are named here, no products are endorsed, and no prices are published. Once the directory is live, listings will be compiled from public sources and re-checked monthly. Corrections and removals are free: see

.

Kept current

## Re-checked every month

Listings are re-checked monthly. Scores move as new public reviews arrive and older ones age, and closed businesses come off at the cycle. Nothing sits frozen from launch day.

A directory is published only when there are enough real contractors with enough public review evidence to make a ranking useful. Where that depth floor is not met, we do not publish.

Nothing is listed yet. This page exists so the coverage and the scoring approach are visible before the directory opens, rather than announced after the fact.

FAQ

## Window & Door Guide questions

When does the Window & Door Guide go live? add

It is planned for September to October 2026. This page describes the coverage and the scoring approach until then.

Will you rank window brands? add

No. The directory ranks contractors, not products. Reviews describe installers, and installation is where most window problems come from.

Can an installer pay for a higher position? add

No. Rank comes from public customer reviews under the published method and cannot be bought.

How do you handle reviews about a sales visit? add

A review describing a quoting appointment is not a review of completed work, and the method accounts for that difference. Our guide on reading contractor reviews explains how to spot them yourself.

Why might an installer I know not appear in the directory? add

A contractor appears once there is enough public review evidence to score them against the published method. An installer with little or no public review record cannot be ranked honestly, so they are left out rather than placed arbitrarily.
