## What this directory covers

The Connecticut Painting Contractors Guide indexes interior and exterior painters across the state. Those two are kept apart because they are close to separate trades. Exterior painting is weather work, scheduled around a New England season that gives you a usable window and then takes it away. Interior painting is work done inside somebody’s occupied house, judged as much on disruption as on finish.

Coverage is statewide, like the rest of our

. Painters travel, and a town-by-town index would keep splitting the same businesses across thinner lists without telling a homeowner anything new. The directory is published by

True Level Media, an independent Connecticut trade publisher

The work described across the listings covers the usual range: priming and surface prep, acrylic latex on most interior walls, low-VOC paint where a household asks for it, elastomeric masonry coatings on block and stucco, power washing before exterior work, and drywall skim coating where a wall needs to be made flat before it can be made new. Lead-safe EPA RRP certification comes up constantly in a state with this much pre-1978 housing.

## How painting is scored here

Scores are built from public customer reviews, weighing sentiment, star rating, volume, recency, and completeness, with a Bayesian adjustment so a small sample cannot beat a large one on luck alone. The method is set out in full on

how we rank contractors

[/methodology/ →](/methodology/)

.

![Minimal timeline showing a review written immediately and one written years later](/images/content/minimal-navy-timeline-illustration-showing-a-revie.webp)

Painting has one criterion the other trades do not lean on as hard: time. A new paint job looks good in the photograph taken the day the crew leaves. Preparation only shows up later, when a bathroom ceiling starts to peel or a south-facing clapboard chalks early. That is why recency is weighed on its own rather than folded into an average, and why an older review describing how a finish held is worth reading rather than discounting.

### What counts as evidence here

| Signal | Weight in the score | Why |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Public customer reviews | Scored: sentiment, rating, volume, recency, completeness | Anyone can go and check them independently, which is the whole basis of the method |
| Small review samples | Reduced by a Bayesian adjustment | A short run of perfect ratings is not the same evidence as a long record |
| Older reviews | Reduced, because recency is weighed | They describe work the contractor may no longer be doing the same way |
| Payment, advertising, any commercial relationship | None. Never used | The ranking engine has no access to who has paid for anything |

> **What is never used**
>
> Payment, advertising spend, and any commercial relationship. Any paid surface would be labeled and sit outside the ranked list.

## Who this directory is for

Painting is the trade homeowners most often assume is interchangeable, and it is the trade where that assumption costs the most.

The visible difference between a careful painter and a fast one is close to zero on handover day. It appears in year two, on the wall that gets afternoon sun or the ceiling above a shower. By then the contractor is long gone and the homeowner has no way of knowing whether the failure was the paint, the surface, or the two hours of preparation that were skipped.

A ranked directory helps precisely because the review record outlives the handshake. Two hundred customers describing how work held up is evidence no quote can offer, and it is the only evidence available to someone comparing three painters who all sound equally confident.

Contractors are covered separately: listing is free, requires nothing, and can be corrected or removed on request.

## What this page is not

No painters are named here, no costs are published, and no estimates are collected. This page describes the directory and the method behind it. If a listing about your painting business is wrong, or you want it removed,

if your business is listed

[/for-contractors/ →](/for-contractors/)

explains what to send and how long it takes. Before hiring anyone for work on an older Connecticut house, it is worth reading

what lead-safe certification means

[/guide/lead-safe-certification-connecticut-homes/ →](/guide/lead-safe-certification-connecticut-homes/)

and asking the firm for its certificate.

Kept current

## Re-checked every month

Listings are re-checked monthly. Scores move as new public reviews arrive and older ones age, and closed businesses come off at the cycle. Nothing sits frozen from launch day.

A directory is published only when there are enough real contractors with enough public review evidence to make a ranking useful. Where that depth floor is not met, we do not publish.

FAQ

## Painting Contractors Guide questions

Does this page list painting contractors? add

No. This page explains what the Connecticut Painting Contractors Guide covers and how painting work is scored. The ranked listings live on the directory's own site.

Can a painter buy a better position? add

No. Position follows public customer reviews under the published method, and the ranking engine has no access to who has paid for anything.

Does the directory publish painting prices? add

No. Nothing is sold here and no cost tables are published. Pricing is a conversation between you and the contractor.

Why does lead-safe certification come up for older houses? add

Much of Connecticut's housing predates 1978, and disturbing old paint is regulated federally. Our guide on lead-safe certification explains what to ask for and links the EPA source.

Why might a painter I know not appear in the directory? add

A contractor appears once there is enough public review evidence to score them against the published method. A painter with little or no public review record cannot be ranked honestly, so they are left out rather than placed arbitrarily.
